CREATING A DONOR ADVISED FUND |
Creating a donor advised fund at Crossroads is easy:
- Set up an initial appointment to talk with staff about your specific
needs and interests. Contact Executive Director Jeanne
Kracher via email or at 773.227.7676.
- Review and sign the Donor Advised Fund Contract and return it to
Crossroads Fund.
- Send a check or transfer appreciated stock or real property.
- It’s up to you. You can a) make a recommendation for a grant (or two
or three); b) request information on certain organizations or issue
areas before making decisions; or c) meet with staff to begin building
an annual giving plan that is right for you.
OUR TWO LEVELS OF DAFs are outlined below. Additional gifts can be
added at any time. You can transfer gifts from the DAF to Crossroads Fund’s
general fund and/or nominate fields of interest or other organizations to be
recipients of grants.
We can’t beat the rates of national conglomerates and/or banking
institutions. But the breadth and depth of first-hand expertise that we
offer in local social change work, particularly new and emerging issues and
organizations in Chicago, is a unique and important benefit. Our experienced
board and staff can help you to direct your investment toward certain
targeted partnerships, resulting in greater impact for the dollar. This is
why our services facilitate the smart and effective giving for change.

INDIVIDUAL DONOR ADVISED GIFTS
You can also nominate grantees or designate a particular field of
interest to be the final recipient of your gift, without opening a Donor
Advised Fund. As in any Crossroads Fund grant, donor anonymity is assured
and grants are monitored. Crossroads Fund staff members are available to
provide you with background information on specific organizations or issue
areas. Fees for this service are 7% of the total grant amount.
ADVANTAGES OF CREATING A DONOR ADVISED FUND
AT CROSSROADS
Looking for a better way to make an impact through your giving?
Discouraged by the investment restrictions, reporting responsibilities, and
the occasionally heavy administrative burdens of a private foundation? Here
are some reasons to partner with Crossroads Fund and establish a Donor
Advised Fund (DAF):
Unlike private foundations, donor advised funds
and supporting organizations are exempt from paying excise taxes on
investment income.
Grantmaking Input: With a DAF, you provide input on the issues and
organizations that your gifts support. You define (with as much or as little
support as needed) your fund’s philanthropic objectives and make grant
recommendations.
Minimal Start Up Costs: The costs are minimal to set up a DAF—significantly
lower than the substantial legal and accounting fees associated with a
private foundation.
Strengthening a Voice for Change: A large part of our work at
Crossroads is advocating in the philanthropy sector for more inclusive and
democratic processes, more "risk-taking" with emerging issues and
constituent-led organizations, and more support for groups getting at the
root causes of social problems. By helping to build our overall assets and
grantmaking, you are partnering with us to strengthen our voice and increase
our presence as we push on multiple levels for change.
