Give a Day to World AIDS
In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the AIDS pandemic
Crossroads Fund is partnering with Chicago Friends of WE-ACTx Rwanda and
the Chicago Women’s AIDS Project in asking Chicagoans to join the Give a
Day to World AIDS Campaign, and donate a day’s salary to fight AIDS and
HIV around the world and in our city. Funds raised will support two
organizations that provide comprehensive care and advocacy for women
living with HIV and AIDS: WE-ACTx Rwanda, which runs three clinics serving
survivors of the genocide in Rwanda, and the Chicago Women’s AIDS Project.

WE-ACTx Responds to the Crisis in Rwanda
Women’s
Equity in Access to Care and Treatment (WE-ACTx) is an international
grassroots nonprofit initiative launched in fall 2003 by frontline AIDS
physicians, activists and researchers with extensive experience in caring
and advocating for HIV-positive women. WE-ACTx began working in Rwanda in
early 2004 in response to an urgent request for help from networks of
Rwandan widows and genocidal rape survivors. 250,000 Rwandan women were
raped during the 1994 genocide. An estimated 60-70% of them are
HIV-positive, some deliberately exposed to HIV as a “slow poison.”
When WE-ACTx began working in Rwanda, only a few dozen of these women had
access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatments.
WE-ACTx serves over 3,000 Rwandan women and children through three
clinics in Kigali, the nation's capitol. The WE-ACTx program provides
testing, health care and counseling for adults and children, as well as
food, transportation, income generation and other needed social services,
all free of cost.

Local Initiatives Address Inequities in Care

Chicago Women's AIDS Project (CWAP) provides prevention
education, advocacy and support for women at risk or living with HIV and
AIDS in the Chicago area. They work to empower women to get the support,
information and services they need to take control of their own health and
to live as fully and productively as possible. They are one of the largest
providers of intensive prevention services in Chicago; during the past two
years, they have reached over 58,000 individuals with prevention
information.

Crossroads Fund: Continuing a Tradition of Supporting AIDS Activism
Since our founding in 1981, Crossroads Fund has been an early funder of
groups involved in HIV and AIDS activism and education. The groups we have
supported include ACT-UP Chicago, Chicago for AIDS Rights (C-FAR), Chicago
Women's AIDS Project, Chicago Women's Health Center, Hispanic AIDS Network,
Women's Health Education Project, Pathfinders Prevention and Education Fund,
Coalition for Positive Sexuality, Transgenesis and the Kupona Network.
About the Campaign
The Give a Day to World AIDS Campaign is a partnership between Chicago
Friends of WE-ACTx-Rwanda, the Chicago Women's AIDS Project and Crossroads
Fund. In fall 2004, Crossroads Fund offered to assist Dr. Mardge Cohen and
WE-ACTx in creating a pooled fund to support their important work. Since that
time, Crossroads Fund has provided administrative and fundraising support
for the pooled fund.
The Give a Day Campaign is an opportunity for donors in Chicago to commit
to supporting global and local work around HIV/AIDS. 20 percent of funds
raised will go to CWAP and 80 percent to WE-ACTx. Crossroads Fund will
continue to serve as a partner in administrating the pooled fund.
